International guitar duo, Loren and Mark, in combination with the Earlville Opera House, are pleased to present a workshop that combines their mastery of Americana music with memorializing how one person can make a difference. Come for our fall Songwriting Workshop on Wednesday, November 4th from 6:30-8:30 pm.
The first portion of the workshop will be full of imaginative wordplay as participants work out lyrics with Morrisville State professor Devon Branca, a published poet who will introduce techniques for writing poetry and lyrics. The second portion of the workshop will combine those lyrics with the acclaimed instrumental abilities of Loren and Mark. Together, participants will work with the personable duo to compose melodies to accompany the lyrics.
From Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan to modern-day bands like The Decemberists, songs connect us with a story. Sometimes, the story is a personal drama or a natural disaster. Sometimes, it’s the story of a hero that captures a songwriter’s imagination. It’s hard to imagine the landscape of American music without the story of Casey Jones, for example. Or the Earlville Opera House story without Joey Skaggs! Joey Skaggs is the colorful character that saved the theater from the wrecking ball in 1971 by purchasing the Opera House and donating it to the community.
Any participant in this EOH workshop who finds it fitting to pay tribute to EOH’s benefactor, also known as America’s top prankster, will get $50 for the finished song*, plus an invitation to perform said song at Mark & Loren’s EOH performance, July 9th, 2016. The songs will be used to celebrate the 45th anniversary of this astounding feat and this unusual benefactor. Check out some of his stories at http://joeyskaggs.com/ for inspiration. Over the years he’s convinced journalists that he runs a whorehouse for dogs, a celebrity sperm bank, and other crazy things.
Come to EOH for an evening of wordplay and instrumental experimentation! Admission is just $10 minimum donation, thanks to NYSPN grant support. Note: Village of Earlville teens and adults are free. Please see http://www.earlvilleoperahouse.com, or call 315-691-3550 for more information. The Earlville Opera House is located at 18 East Main, Earlville, NY 13332.
This Project is funded in part with an award received from The New York State Presenters Network Presenter-Artist Partnership Project made possible through a regrant from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
